Tvaia was created with the intention of connecting, by using food as a tool for social cohesion, the people who live in and pass through the city of Urbino, people who usually do not have the opportunity to meet each other.
Encountering each other is always a form of nourishment, and nothing unites more easily than eating together.
Laying a cloth along the table is the first step in defining the meeting space between diners. That is why we thought of symbolically gathering around a tablecloth, tvaia in Marche dialect, Urbino citizens, workers and students. During the events, interaction with food takes the form of a ritual, becoming an ice-breaking tool: each time through a different activity, diners are invited to symbolically feed each other.
Two vegetable dinners were held among strangers: Party with Leek, in which the practice of exquisite corpse was adopted to collectively compose dishes, and Fearless Potatoes, characterized by the use of social utensils.
Tvaia also hosted two community events: Unusual Salads, where people were invited to collectively prepare and mix a huge salad, and Faces and Focaccias, an urban picnic during which a huge tarp was spread in front of the city’s landmark Ducal Palace.
Tvaia was developed during the design methodology course within the ISIA U Noise project, which attempts to engage the community in a new educational system.
